About us
Our Mission
To provide the most vulnerable orphaned and abandoned Ugandan children with a safe and loving home, education, and vocational training so they may grow into self-reliant citizens whose lives are full of opportunity and promise.
Malayaka House rescues orphaned and abandoned children in Uganda and offers them a new life with new opportunities. We provide a secure home where our children can thrive in an environment of love, equality and respect. We support them with nutrition, education, vocational training, and an extended family of local women caretakers, community members, and international volunteers, all working together to create a bright and hopeful future for children that society had discarded…the children of Malayaka House.
Our organization was started in 2005 when Robert rescued a baby that a mentally ill and homeless woman gave birth the rescue of one child, Malayaka, and quickly grew as the local Ugandan Authorities found more children in desperate need of medical attention, proper nutrition, and a place they could call home. Once our founder Robert Fleming saw the state of these children – Bobo, Viola, John, Jimmy, Cheche – he could not turn away as so many others had. He accepted responsibility for these children and although he was just visiting the country at the time, he decided to find a place for everyone to live, scraped together some funding and quickly hired some women to help care for the ailing children who were now in his care. Our orphanage home had been born, and it was named for the baby who started it all…Malayaka House.
We have grown from that precarious beginning to a bustling home with more than 40 children in our care, ranging in age from infant to early twenties. Each one of them is a survivor of severe neglect, abuse or abandonment, but they are all thriving in our environment of unconditional love and support. We are a family in every way, and these are our children. They each have different needs and personalities and add to the dynamic in their own way. We have learned so much from them and have delighted in watching as their wounds healed, their bellies grew, and their feet began to take those precious first steps towards new beginnings.
Malayaka House is comprised of four countries, working together in beautiful collaboration to make our house a home. Malayaka House is a registered nonprofit in the USA, Spain, Germany, and Uganda. While Uganda is our home base, we couldn’t survive without the support of our friends in other countries. The USA, Spain, and Germany handle the lion’s share of our fundraising efforts and provide us with the most international volunteers at our home in Uganda.
We have had visitors from Spain, Germany, Israel, Canada, and the United States, all with different languages and cultures to share with the children…and all with immense love for them. The kids openly return the love to all of our volunteers and have developed beautiful relationships with them. This experience is very unique and will surely benefit the children in a country where tourism is a thriving industry, as well as the knowledge that they have friends all over the world
